I bought several sets of remote controlled outlet switches over the course of two holiday seasons. They're a popular holiday accessory for driving Christmas lights, but with a bit of hacking they can be used year-round for simple, open source, cheap home automation.
They use a 315MHz radio frequency and a simple pulse coded protocol with short and long bits. In this video I demonstrate reverse engineering the protocol, measuring the bit times, updating my code with the new bit times, and testing out the board I built. The board connects via USB and a Python web server serves a simple outlet on-off page that I can access from my phone.
