Thanks for checking out my lesson. If you'd like to know how to play like this, be sure to check out my free guitar course at https://tinyurl.com/danh411.
I started playing guitar when I was about 13 years old but even though I'm a child of the 80s and loved metal bands like Ratt and Dokken and guitar heroes like Warren DeMartini and George Lynch -- and even wore out the Randy Rhoads Ozzy Osbourne Tribute album -- I never put forth much effort to learn how to play lead guitar.
During most of my 20s, I gravitated towards acoustic guitars and became a singer-songwriter and enjoyed expressing myself that way, to the sheer horror of others. But when I was in my 30s I knew that the only way I was going to get on stage and actually dig my heels into playing live was to move to a big city and get into a band as a guitar player, and to do that, I would need to hone my chops and actually learn how to play the darn thing.
It didn't click right away, and I didn't go the traditional route, either. I learned bits and pieces, which is probably not the best way to learn anything. But by doing it this way, it gave me a unique perspective about guitar playing. I call this my "crazy way of understanding the guitar," and it's a type of understanding I inject into all my lessons. The more I learn myself, and the more I teach, the more I realize I'm onto something special. There's just something about how I see the fretboard that I think will also inspire others.
But that doesn't mean it's a perfect system without flaws.
To the contrary, I realize almost daily that there are things that I just don't know how to do. I then see how those things fit into my "system," and I'm pleasantly surprised that they almost always do. So in this lesson I'm hoping to share with you a bit about my journey, how I developed this crazy system that I teach, and how I'm often reminded of things that I need to work on to help me become a better player so I can drag you along with me and help you reach your goals as well. It's not pretty. Some people may not like this one, but it is what it is.
So without further ado, check out the 10 things I suck at on guitar and how my personal pitfalls will help you get better at your own playing!
