A Bankrate.com study found that since March 2022, when the Fed began increasing interest rates, around 50% of loan applicants have been denied. The denials affected people applying for a range of loans, including mortgages, auto loans, and personal loans, as well as credit cards, apartment rentals, and insurance. Sarah Foster, an economic analyst at Bankrate.com which conduced the survey, expressed surprise and concern at the findings, noting that 17% of applicants experienced multiple rejections. While raising interest rates is a key tool for lowering inflation, Foster said the impact on families is clear.
