Here’s the story of how my favorite little Damascus Steel knife came to be. This was a special project because I got to combine forging and woodworking and spend quality time with a good friend while making something I'll use every day in my kitchen. Pattern welding steel was a new endeavor for me, but forging out a blade, fitting the handle, and grinding it was an absolute blast. Well- maybe not the grinding part, much like sanding, it got a little tedious, but I absolutely love the way it all came out. Huge thanks to Pratt Fine Arts Center for letting me use their power hammer for this project, and to my bladesmith buddy Ryna for showing me the bladesmithing ropes. Ryna is an award winning bladesmith who trained under blade masters like David Lisch. Forging a knife is a much more involved process than I originally thought it would be, and it made me appreciate the incredible amount of skill that goes into making knives- especially when making products or sets that aren't just one-off's.
