We went out to Nebraska to provide testimony in support of LB67--the Fair Repair Act. We had no chance to respond to the opposition testimony during the hearing. This video highlights the fear, uncertainty, and doubt that the opposition is spreading as the right to repair threatens their model of monopolizing repair to force consumers into unnecessary early upgrades of repairable electronics. Do we have the right to use legislation to force OEMs to make repair parts, tools, and information available for repair? In an ideal world, no. In an ideal world we don't need littering laws, lemon laws, warranty laws, and businesses will prioritize American jobs over outsourcing cheap labor overseas. In an ideal world, the free market will weed out bad companies by allowing consumers to vote with their wallets. But we don't live in an ideal world. In the real world, businesses must be compelled to put ethical and moral practices in place that supercede shareholder interests. In the real world, the sheer volume of information that bombards consumers over every purchasing decision is a roadblock to 'voting with our wallets' to favor companies that are aligned with our moral and ethical values. In the real world, there is no competitive choice for electronic devices from companies that support repair of those devices. If we refuse to accept that we must legislate good business practices, and we rely on profit-focused businesses to naturally make choices that are best for consumers and the environment then we are actively choosing to steer the world on a path that ultimately leads to the scary opening scenes from the movie Wall-e. While that may seem like fear, uncertainty, and doubt----think hard. What, exactly, is standing in the way of this becoming our future if we simply do nothing?
