Are frames immortal? You might be surprised. If a layer-2 loop exists in your network, you might find that your frames loop indefinitely. Is this a problem? Yes! As frames loop around your network, they consume resources. Add in more hosts and more frames, and you can grind your network to a halt. This is what we call a broadcast storm. So what can we do? The good news is that this problem was solved way back in 1985, when spanning-tree was developed. Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP) detects loops, and then selects a link in the loop to disable. This breaks the loop, so we no longer have a problem. In the next video, we’ll see exactly how this works.
