You are watching a video that I made with my mentor, New York City media guru Tony Schwartz. Tony hated the tobacco companies (and they didn't not like him either) and he made this video to help people smoking cigarettes or vaping tobacco, to quit. The video is called If You Love Someone Who Smokes and was made to provoke a smoker to quit by telling them this simple story.
Statistics show that scary medical videos to get smokers to quit just don't work. Neither do "you're a bad person" videos. This film shows neither of those things. Instead it tells the story of two friends -- Tony Schwartz and NYC police officer Ken McFeeley.
"If You Love Someone Who Smokes" contains no medical details, no special "techniques" and it supports no specific drug solution. But for thousands of smokers, this video gives them the heart and the courage to quit-- for the last time. The film does not scare or intimidate you. But once having seen it, you can never forget it.
Tobacco cigarette smoking is really bad for you. Why?
Cancer: Smoking tobacco cigarettes is a leading cause of lung cancer and can also cause cancer in other parts of the body such as the mouth, throat and bladder.
Smoking damages the lungs and can cause chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other respiratory diseases that make it difficult to breathe.
Smoking increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases by damaging the blood vessels and reducing the amount of oxygen that the body receives.
Smoking can affect fertility in both men and women and can also cause complications during pregnancy.
Smoking can cause bad breath, stained teeth, and gum disease.
Smoking can weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections.
And of course addiction: Tobacco cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can lead to dependence.
So why is it hard to quit cigarette tobacco?
Nicotine addiction: Cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance that can cause physical and psychological dependence. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms can include anxiety, irritability, depression, and cravings, which can make it difficult to quit.
Habits and routines: Smoking often becomes a part of daily routines and habits, such as smoking after a meal or with a cup of coffee. Breaking these habits and routines can be challenging.
Social pressure: Smoking is often a social activity, and smokers may feel pressure to continue smoking to fit in with their peers or social groups.
Some smokers use cigarettes as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or other difficult emotions. Quitting smoking may leave them without this coping mechanism, which can be difficult to replace.
Some smokers are afraid that they will gain weight after quitting smoking, which can be a deterrent to quitting.
Although there are thousands who have used this video is enough motivation to go cold turkey, there are several ways to try to stop the habit.
Nicotine replacement therapy: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a method of quitting smoking that involves using products like nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, or inhalers to help manage nicotine withdrawal symptoms. NRT can help reduce cravings and make it easier to quit smoking.
Prescription medications: There are several prescription medications, such as bupropion and varenicline, that can help with quitting smoking by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Behavioral therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can help smokers identify and change the thoughts and behaviors that lead to smoking.
Joining a support group or seeking support from friends and family members can provide encouragement and motivation during the quitting process.
And quitting cold turkey: Some smokers choose to quit smoking cold turkey, which means stopping smoking without any assistance from medication or therapy. While this method can be difficult, it can be effective for some individuals.
