Lucky Man by the Verve was written by Richard Ashcroft and released in 1997 as the third single from the band's third studio album Urban Hymns.. In all honesty the brit pop/rock scene wasn't really for me growing up, I was more into the American rock of Pearl Jam with a good share of the funk of the Chilli Peppers and always the song writing of the Counting Crows.. But there were some stand out tunes that I loved, like Love Spreads by The Stone Roses ( which blew my mind on first hearing ).. Lots of Radiohead, and this by the Verve.. Just a lovely tune that I recently got asked to sing at a wedding so thought I'd give it a strum on route to a recent camp up on the downs.. Whilst at music college shortly after this was released I was asked to join the vocal tech's choir which consisted of pretty much all girls so they needed some male voices.. Hell yeh I said! we performed on the pitch at Twickenham Stadium for I think The England/Ireland and England/Scotland games but beforehand went and recorded the songs at a studio in London.. Where am I going with this I sense you thinking ; ) Well none other than the man himself Richard Ashcroft was recording there too in the booth next door which caused quite a stir amongst the choir. We didn't get to meet him but felt quite special at the time as a bunch of young up and comings : )
