2022's cost of living increase was the highest since 1982 and there’s every reason to believe that 2023’s COLA will be even higher. All of this is a drain on the Social Security trust fund. Today, Social Security is still getting depleted, but the value of the fund is also declining and benefits payments are rising at more than double the rate of the interest being earned on the underlying assets.
