As newlyweds, Valerie and Jason knew they wanted children, but were enjoying their family of two, going out with friends and living in the city. They waited a year before they started trying and had immediate success, but unsuccessful pregnancies followed. Together, Valerie and Jason dealt with the emotional and physical effects, and decided they needed help.
They came to Penn Medicine and immediately felt a connection with Dr. Suleena Kalra at Penn Fertility Care. Dr. Kalra’s confidence assured Valerie and Jason and they decided to pursue in vitro fertilization and implanted two embryos in hopes of a successful pregnancy. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the preferred or most common infertility treatment used when the fallopian tubes are severely damaged or absent, and for unexplained or male factor infertility. Due to its high success rate, IVF has been used more frequently in recent years for many causes of infertility.
Two weeks after the IVF procedure they went in for a definitive ultrasound and were given the great news: they were pregnant with twins. Valerie’s pregnancy was an easy one, and she delivered two healthy babies at Penn Medicine. Today they are parents of happy, active two-year-olds and couldn’t imagine life any other way.
