Metroidvania fans have been spoiled in recent years with the likes of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and many, many others. Surgent Studios’ debut game, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, definitely isn’t good enough to be able to sit atop that lofty perch in that hallowed company, with core pillars like platforming, combat, and exploration feeling too simplistic for the game’s own good.
But though it has its issues, Tales of Kenzera also leaves its mark. Boasting a genuinely affecting and well-told story, and a rich and vibrant world that you want to learn more about, there’s enough here for Tales of Kenzera to be worth a look, even with its issues.
