My son and all his friends are obsessed with Minecraft, so I knew I wanted to throw a big Minecraft bash for his 10th Birthday. I had no idea where to begin with the party-planning, so I hit the web and found some fabulous resources. I'm providing links, below, as a kind of "do-it-yourself" guide for others who might want to throw a similar party, and also to give credit where credit is due.
First, awesome song credit to CaptainSparklez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2rDbRUDkds
The amazing cake was from Sugarland Bakery in Chapel Hill, NC: http://www.sugarlandchapelhill.com/cakes/
For the food table, I did a bunch of "cube" foods, like sandwiches cut into cube shapes, cheese and salami cubes with square crackers, square pita chips, and green rice krispie treats with frosting on them to look like zombies. And lots of candy, of course.
I made the invitations and thank-you notes by adding a little party hat to an Enderman image I found on the web that I can't seem to find anymore. I've uploaded the jpgs to my son's website for anyone to download and use: http://www.bencomics.com/
The Steve Heads were made out of grocery bags using print-outs downloaded from SteveLange.net who very generously provides the pdf's for free: http://www.stevelange.net/2011/10/24/making-your-own-minecraft-steve-head-from-pdfs/
I made the Creeper and Enderman gift bags and the little green Creeper decorations by gluing tissue squares to green and black gift bags I found at Oriental Trading Company. http://www.orientaltrading.com/
Those same tissue squares came in handy to cover various boxes I got for free out of the recycling pile, to make the grass "cubes" that are everywhere.
The big Creepers were really easy: I just bought some lamp boxes and painted them green, then used black construction paper for the "faces". They were a HUGE favorite!
The kids loved the treasure hunt: I hid various "Minecraft" things around our property and they had to find one of each. There was gold, diamond, lapis lazuli, obsidian, clay, iron, wood, sand, and rock. For gold I used gold coins, for diamond I used little fake diamonds from Oriental Trading, for the clay I used some cheap potter's clay formed into cubes, for iron I used steel balls, and the sand, wood, and rock they were able to find easily anywhere on the property. What really rocked their worlds, though, was the real lapis lazuli and obsidian that I found pretty cheap on ebay.
The biggest hit of the party was the "crafting", where they traded in "cubes" of gold, diamond, lapis, etc., for some really cool prizes. The cubes were actually cheap little gift boxes from Oriental Trading -- we had over three hundred of them in gold, black, green, blue, turquoise, etc., to represent all the various Minecraft cubes, then scattered them in the woods where they had to collect as many as they could while dodging Enderman (me) and two Creepers (Pop and sis). Then they brought the cubes inside to use them to purchase the prizes on the crafting table.
The prize table was so fun to put together. Here's a list of some of the favorites and where I got them:
Crafting paper (this was a big hit and best of all FREE, thanks to the instructables website): http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Ultimate-Guide-to-Minecraft-Papercrafts/
Minecraft Pins: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ArtByMark
Minecraft Paper Crafts (made by a thirteen year old!): http://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleBarofSoap?section_id=7983359
Minecraft Notecube and Fridge Magnets: http://www.thinkgeek.com/
Ipod Sticker: http://www.etsy.com/listing/89507761/apple-ipod-classic-skin-cover-minecraft
There were also coal bouncing balls, soapstone cubes, rare earth magnets, foam cubes, extra clay, pyrite cubes, torches, geodes, and more that I can't even remember, plus lots and lots of candy. I had licorice for the black obsidian cubes, gravel candy for the grey "rock" cubes, red hots for the red lava cubes, blue chocolate balls for lapis lazuli, turquoise rock candy for diamonds, green m&ms for grass, caramels for dirt, gold coins for gold, and white salt water taffy for the snow cubes. All the candy was from http://www.ohnuts.com/
That's everything I can think of for now. Hope this helps!
