The introduction of a central bank digital currency for the Euro area provides a unique opportunity to make the European payment ecosystem more resilient, inclusive and fair.
A digital euro could reduce the dependence on non-EU payment service providers and would provide a means to European service providers for further innovation in the payments space.
At the same time, the design of the digital euro has to be carefully calibrated. Concerns about data protection and the privacy aspects of the digital euro are valid and have to be considered carefully.
Making the right policy choices is a complex and technical exercise. However, the design of the digital euro will be crucial in determining its uptake by citizens, its resilience and ultimately its democratic legitimacy.
We will discuss these topics with respect to the new legislative proposal on the digital euro and the ongoing technical work of the ECB with:
Piero Cipollone, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank
Jan Ceyssens, Head of Unit Digital Finance at the European Commission
Anna Martin, Financial Services Officer at The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC)
Axel Schaefer, Payment Regulation and Innovation Specialist at Ingka Group (IKEA)
Henrike Hahn, Member of the European Parliament (The Greens/EFA), deputy speaker of the German delegation
