This my approach on how to discuss career goals with your manager, which can be challenging at times, these are some of the tips that have helped me progress my career and lessons learnt from my 15 years working as a professional structural engineer. I have taken this from my experience as a structural engineer, however, this advice should apply to any industry. Career progression discussions with managers can be stressful at the best of times and it is all about forward planning. These are my tips on how you should think about your career progression discussions with your manager, and these can lead to getting the pay rises and promotions you are seeking. The discussions on payrise and promotions have been decided long before you enter the negations with your boss, it is all about showing that you are dedicated to your career and the company. You must discuss your career goals with your manager throughout the year and not just at the end-of-year, mid-year discussions. Throughout the year these informal career progression discussions with your manager will show them at your are a go-getter and someone these are looking to keep. You also need to be focusing on solving problems your manager or the company as it isn't a one-way street, a business needs to earn money so you need to prove your worth. this will make it much easier to negotiate that pay rise and/or promotion.
