A book launch discussion with Greg Berman from the Centre for Court Innovation and John Prideaux of The Economist.
Moderated by John Prideaux, this event will feature a Q&A with Greg Berman who will discuss his new book, Daring to Fail: First Person Stories of Criminal Justice Reform. The book is a collection of interviews with leaders in a variety of fields -- prosecution, policing, community corrections, indigent defence and others -- about leadership, management and innovation. While each interview is unique, taken together they offer vivid testimony that it is in fact possible to make change happen within the criminal justice system, provided that officials are encouraged to risk failure and given the time they need to engage in an iterative learning process.
Fear of failure is a major obstacle to innovation in criminal justice. Many prosecutors, police chiefs, probation officials and central government policymakers don't feel they have the freedom to engage in trial and error. And unlike the world of business, where failure is often seen as a healthy and inevitable by-product of success, criminal justice does not have a rich tradition of honest discussion of mistakes.
To correct this imbalance, the New York-based non-profit Centre for Court Innovation has made a multi-year investment in encouraging a more honest conversation about the challenges of criminal justice reform in the United States. The Centre's focus has been on helping policymakers and practitioners learn key lessons from failed criminal justice experiments and in so doing, build a healthier, more enduring, sophisticated institutional memory in criminal justice.
