I’ve had a lot of people ask about how to measure their metabolism and how dietitians use indirect calorimetry - so I thought what a better way to explain the process than being the patient!?
Indirect calorimetry is a method of measuring heat production and gas exchange within someone’s body and calculates their Resting Energy Expenditure. RMR is the amount of calories your body needs at rest and to perform life sustaining functions (lungs breathing, heat beating, etc).
Dietitians use indirect calorimetry for a myriad of reasons but particularly in the hospital setting in the ICU for ventilated patients to ensure adequate nutrition through tube feeding or TPN. It’s also being used in private practice more to measure clients metabolisms for their specific goals!

This was so fun to do. Huge thanks to Nutrition By Joey, LLC for letting me come to her business and film the whole thing!
