We no longer simply filter traffic based on IP address and port number. Threats are way too sophisticated these days. Instead, we need to look inside the payload.
This includes looking at malicious files, vulnerability exploits, access to command and control servers, URLs, and data loss.
Palo Alto firewalls do this by using security profiles. We still have a regular security policy, which allows and denies traffic based on simple criteria. If the traffic is allowed, then the security profiles are used to look deeper into the traffic.
