Avatar The Way of the Water (Avatar 2) is upon us, so letโs address the idea that Avatar had no cultural impact. In this Avatar video essay I revisit James Cameronโs 2009 Avatar and look at why it has the reputation it does, and why it attracts a level of criticism that I think is disproportionate to the quality of the film. Because Avatar isโฆ.fine. Itโs not the revolutionary piece of cinema people at the time thought it might be, but after 13 years it is still an entertaining, by-the-book blockbuster that delivers a visual spectacle that is still astounding. As the only movie in the 21st Century to be the biggest of itโs year that was not based on a pre-existing IP, I think itโs worth giving Avatar a lukewarm defence.
AVATAR: On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na'vi, beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na'vi woman (Zoe Saldana). As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world.
