"It amounts to persecution -- an attack on freedom of the press", complains Taysir Alluni's lawyer. Ever since the War on Terror began, Al Jazeera has attracted the wrath of the US. Its offices in Baghdad and Kabul have been shelled, journalists killed and staff are currently banned from reporting in Iraq. But it's the arrest of its reporter, Taysir Alluni, that may do most to shape the way terrorism is reported. Four years ago, Alluni scooped a world exclusive by interviewing Bin Laden. Now, he's been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for collaborating with terrorists. "In order to obtain the benefits he did, he was of assistance to Al Qaeda", claims the prosecutor. But his family refute all allegations and claim the people he is accused of collaborating with aren't even members of Al Qaeda. "Is reaching Bin Laden a crime for a journalist?" questions one supporter. Other journalists are worried about the precedent Alluni's prosecution sets. "This trial makes our lives much more difficult", states Al Jazeera news editor Ahmed Sheik. "It is a very dangerous, very negative precedent."
