Using the operational mode is crucial to setting up and managing networking functionality on devices. Follow along as Knox explains the differences and uses of Operational Mode: • How to read the symbols that tell you what mode you're operating in • Understanding the two modes in Junos: Config and Operational • Exploring all the commands you have access to in Operational mode • Showing just how versatile and useful context-sensitive help is in Junos • Understanding the most useful and most frequently used commands in Operational Mode There's a simple way to tell what mode you're operating in when you're on a Junos CLI. The final symbol in the command line indicates your mode: A greater than symbol indicates operational mode. You'll want to differentiate because there are two modes in Junos: Operational and Config. Operational mode is where you check on the operations of your devices and your OS -- you could think of it as where you type "show" or "ping" commands. Config mode is where you actually set the configurations themselves -- protocols and IP addresses. A key to using Operational Mode is knowing that no matter where you are in the command line, you can always type "?" to see what commands are available to you. On top of that, typing "show ?" in your command line will give you a better understanding of Junos' context-sensitive help. "show ?" reveals only those parameters and commands that can further shape the "show" command. And you can keep digging deeper and deeper into what inputs a command will accept with just a simple question mark. Junos' context-sensitive help can also complete your work for you. While typing out a command, pressing "Tab" will complete the command you're writing.
