The first genome-wide comparison of eastern and western butterflies confirms that, while they fly differently, they are genetically the same. The journal Molecular Ecology published the findings, led by evolutionary biologists at Emory University. The paper builds on previous work of more limited genetic studies, as well as observational and tracking data. The findings may help in the conservation of monarch butterflies.
