This film was made in the heyday of 16mm documentary filmmaking. I was a young filmmaker looking for stories to tell and since almost no one had been filmed, most every person agreed to let me record their "story." And virtually every story that I uncovered, was new. The camera was heavy and it was connected to a Nagra audio recorder by a wire. My colleague and I looked for stories that we could show to NET, National Educational Television, and they were buying films just like this one from independent filmmakers like us. And they paid us pretty good money. $2000! The piano player is 10-year-old Michaela Harel. She was considered a prodigy because she had only been playing for three years and was, and still is if you look her up, a great piano player. She was getting a new grand piano in a fairly high rise apartment in New York City. And carrying a grand piano up the stairs was impossible. And it was too big for the elevator. I asked how the piano movers were going to do this and she said they would raise the piano up outside the apartment using pulleys and pull it through a window. It seemed impossible. We showed up for the filming and told the movers what we wanted to do and they were totally supportive. They did their thing and let us do ours. The filming took about two hours, total and she had to play the same Mozart Sonata in C Major on two different pianos. And the tuning of those two pianos had to be the same. We used a metronome for her to keep perfect time through several performances on two pianos. Today this kind of filmmaking would be easy but at the time, where even the audio mix had to be done in real time without stopping and starting, making this short subject was a challenge and proved our technical capabilities as filmmakers.
