The intrigues, shifting alliances and bloodshot inspired “Game of Thrones”. By the early 1460’s the House of York were on top and their candidate had been crowned King Edward IV of England.The leader of the house of Lancaster, King Henry VI, was his prisoner in the Tower of London. As the 1460’s progressed, Edward fell out with his cousin and key supporter, the Earl of Warwick, known as “Warwick the Kingmaker”. Finally the rift erupted into warfare and Warwick drove Edward from his throne and re-installed Henry VI. Edward, however, marched on London to reclaim his crown. The Lancastrians (now led by Warwick) positioned their 15,000 army outside Barnet (about 10 miles north of London). Edward’s slightly smaller army (10,000) marched out of London to meet them. When dawn broke on the 14th April 1471, the battlefield was covered in dense fog. In the fog, confusion reigned. Two parts of the Lancastrian army needed up attacking each other and panic spread through Warwick’s army that they had been betrayed. As the fog lifted Edward and his brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, saw the Lancastrian army in disarray and drove home their advantage. As he raced to his horse, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, was cut down. Warwick the kingmaker was dead. Despite being outnumbered, Edward had won the battle of Barnet. The losses were probably similar - about 1500 dead on each side, but the impact was that the most powerful noble (and possibly the best military commander) in England was dead. But the Wars of the Roses were not over yet.That very day, Henry VI’s wife, Margaret of Anjou landed in England at the head of an army to rescue her imprisoned husband, Henry VI.
