This is my slow living evening routine. I love the evening. Things quiet down as it slowly gets dark. Recently, I have adopted the slow living lifestyle. And as part of that, I’m trying to be more intentional with my evenings. This calm evening routine is typical of how I would like to spend my free hours at night. I definitely have nights where I just binge Netflix. But, one step at a time, I try to mix in more mindful ways to quiet down and unwind after a busy day. I like to stop working around 5pm, and then first do an intense cardio workout. I then jump into the shower and change into a fresh pair of clothes. I love to cook. I find it very relaxing, a great way to get out of my head and just mess about. Tonight, I’m making spaghetti! With chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, and pesto alla Calabrese. Top it off with some grated parmesan cheese, parsley, and toasted pine nuts, and dinner is ready! As part of my intention to slow down and be more present, I decide to not do anything else during my meal. This way, I can really focus my attention on how the meal tastes, and it also helps in not eating too fast. After dinner, I spent the rest of the night doing the dishes, making tea, playing guitar, and reading a novel. Around 10:30pm, I head to bed and listen to an episode of the 99% Invisible podcast. Not every night looks like this, but these are some calming practices that help me to slow down and prepare for the much-needed rest ahead.
