My name is David Guarraia. I'm a preventative cardiologist at the University of Virginia. As a preventive cardiologist, my role really is to work with patients to prevent a initial cardiac event with both diet, lifestyle, and medications if they're necessary, or in patients who have had cardiac events, prevent a secondary event. To achieve success, what we create is a patient physician plan, understanding all the variables of their cardiovascular conditions and what might be beneficial to them or detrimental. And we focused on that plan as a long-term guide for success. I went into medicine actually from graduate school. I was in a drug design, drug development program and took the first two years with medical students and their respective classes.
When they went into the third and fourth year rotations, I followed them one day on rounds and became in completely enamored with what they did. Typically, what gives me the greatest satisfaction is seeing patients achieve significant weight reduction, improvement in blood pressure, in cholesterol parameters, and seeing them enjoy a high quality of life with freedom from cardiovascular procedures. The research conducted at this institution is world-class, and the facilities that are offered to patients are second to none.
