New research by scientists apparently shows that it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn. In fact the planets have the capability to create 1000 tonnes of diamonds a year. According to the research lightning storms on the planets turn methane into soot which hardens into chunks of graphite and then diamonds as it falls. The diamonds apparently fall like hail stones and melt into the planets hot cores. The biggest diamonds formed on the planets are said to measure a centimetre in diameter. So they would defiantly be big enough to be set in engagement rings and other diamond jewel pieces. This astronomical discovery was presented by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and NASA’s jet Propulsion Laboratory at the annual meeting for the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in Denver. According to Dr. Baines the diamonds formation would most likely be in the upper atmosphere, and once the diamonds fall to extreme depths the immense pressure and temperature is so harsh that it’s difficult to what actually happens to the carbon down there and if it remains a solid.
