My friend Nick and I built a one of a kind Live Edge Coffee Table with a Metal Base using all found or free items, including a slab from the very first tree I cut down and slabbed. Resourcefulness is very important as a farm owner, and this was no exception. I traded a fellow farmer a year’s worth of organic vegetable starts for my garden for a custom built live edge coffee table with a metal base. She is going to use it as a boot bench in her mud room/ entryway. There are several details that really make this design pop, the patina on the welded steel frame, the shou sugi ban (burned live edge) on the rough sawn slab, and the buttery smooth white oak slats in the bottom shelf. This is a fairly easy project that can be easily modified to fit any size space or room in the house- be it an entry way table, sofa table, a side table, a coffee table, a bench for the end of the bed, the opportunities are endless. Watch to learn a few tips on how to weld a metal base, how to patina steel, how to shousugiban, how to accomodate for wood movement, and how to attach a wood slab to a metal base.
