It was a year like no other…health care workers all over America reaching across the country to help their colleagues deal with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Last April, 100 caregivers from Intermountain volunteered to assist New York hospitals during the state’s first major surge. In true New York fashion, Northwell planned to return the favor when the initial surge subsided; that’s why a total of 30 Northwell nurses travelled to Utah in three teams of 10 for two-week assignments to work in Intermountain’s intensive care units (ICUs) – assisting both COVID-19 patients and those suffering with other life-threatening illnesses, as well.
Two Northwell nurses, along with their project manager, Andrew Roberts, will be on hand to enjoy a virtual reunion with their Intermountain counterparts. Both teams will describe what they experienced on the ground; they will also reveal their reasons for volunteering to travel to COVID-19 hotspots and share what they’ve learned about themselves along the way.
The two Northwell nurses representing Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC and North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, and the Intermountain volunteers agree on two key points: Being willing to move forward and face danger in an effort to help others and having the opportunity to reciprocate in helping their counterparts battle the disease
