Das Forschungsschiff Polarstern ist das wichtigste Werkzeug der deutschen Polarforschung. Am 9. Dezember 2022 jährt sich die Indienststellung des Eisbrechers zum vierzigsten Mal. Das Flaggschiff des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts hat bisher über 130 erfolgreiche Expeditionen in Arktis und Antarktis durchgeführt und war ein Zuhause auf Zeit für tausende Forschende aus Deutschland und der ganzen Welt. Dabei hat die Polarstern 1,8 Millionen Seemeilen sicher zurückgelegt. Das sind mehr als 3,3 Millionen Kilometer.
