Free CCNA Training Course | Part 6 - Power Over Ethernet
Welcome to the Free CCNA Training Course. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam.
Part 1 of this series starts with Layer-2/Switching technology. This covers topics like general switching, VLANs, Interfaces, Spanning-Tree, RSTP, Etherchannels, and Power Over Ethernet (PoE).
The website has additional links for further study to take you to the next level. Links are at the end of the description.
In this video, we’re going cover:
0:00 Overview
0:55 The PoE Standards
4:37 Supplying Power
Switches can provide power to Powered Devices (PDs) like wireless access points and phones. This is done using a technology called Power Over Ethernet, or PoE. This only provides a few watts, which is generally enough for low-powered devices.
The original standard was Cisco Inline Power, but it was soon turned into a vendor-neutral standard by the IEEE (802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt, also known as Type 1, 2, 3, and 4, or UPoE/UPoE+). Each standard improves on the amount of power that can be delivered.
The Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), that is, the device drawing the power, requests a particular power class. For example, it may require 15.4 watts of power (type-1) to boot up. It may request a higher power class later if needed.
Switches have a power budget, which is the total amount of power that they can supply across all ports. Sometimes this can be increased by adding an extra power supply unit to the switch.
If your switch doesn’t support PoE, you can get a PoE injector. Or, if you want the opposite ( you have PoE, but your device doesn’t support it), you could use a PoE splitter.
