Welcome to SUBMERGED... As an artist, swimmer, and project leader, I am excited to share my collaboration with avid naturalist and videographer David Lindeman. I have curated a series of David's underwater videos. This collection is part of a collaborative creative art project, featuring animals and environments found along Staten Island shores. In addition to swimming in NY Bay. I have found Lindeman's marvelous, and often amusing "captures" inspire and have directed my 2023-24 drawings, paintings and prints. Please watch these short videos with eyes wide, and become familiar with the tidal ebb and flow, sites and sounds that form the SUBMERGED half of the New York Bay Area. Observe crustaceans (spider crabs, hermit crab, channeled whelk) various fish (bass, burr, flounder, blennie) and the remarkable skates, seahorses and croaking vocals of sea robins. A selection of my recent images (https://www.matyasart.com/works) inspired by these videos will presented as public installation/exhibition in spring of 2024 at NYC PARKS at Faber Park and Pool at Richmond Terrace and Faber Street, Staten Island, with its heroically scaled pools and dramatic Romanesque revival and Art Deco building adjacent to NY Harbor.
