The Nashville Marathon Sessions 1970 (June & September) Elvis Presley's legendary 1969 sessions at American Sound Studios in Memphis are rightly seen as a high water mark in his recording career. The next set of sessions he did in Nashville in June and a few songs in September of 1970 are not held in the same regard. But why? Both sets of sessions showed Elvis breaking away from the restraints of his publishing company and tackling fresh, new material from current writers. Both were done with a crack band of players steeped in southern country, rhythm and blues and gospel music, in this case the soon-to-be-legendary "Nashville Cats", a loose collective of musicians that everyone from Bob Dylan to Neil Young to George Harrison were seeking out at the same time. The fact that the fantastic recordings from the sessions were never assembled in as coherent a way as ''From Elvis In Memphis'' is likely to blame. The songs were scattered on half of ''That's The Way lt Is'', ''Love Letters From Elvis'' and ''Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old)'', none of which are a definitive collection of songs from these sessions, most with strings and vocals overdubbed. But within the sessions we find Elvis in amazing form, leading the band through a series of songs in every imaginable genre including then brand new songs like "Bridge Over Troubled Water", heard now in new mixes by Grammy-winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang showcasing what it must have been like in the studio. Perhaps it was his triumphant return to live performing that overshadowed these recordings or just that there was not an album called ''From Elvis In Nashville'' to organize and showcase the sessions that has caused them to fall away overtime.
